AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE AIR CURTAIN FROM DAIKIN UK AND BIDDLE
The Daikin/Biddle VRV III air curtain was celebrated as the ‘Air Movement Product of the Year’ at the 2009 H&V News Awards – the leading awards recognising excellence in heating, ventilating and air-conditioning.
The industry-leading product stood out for its performance in combating climate separation across the doorway of retail outlets, while delivering high levels of energy efficiency and greater comfort for staff and customers. The first-of-a-kind product is unique in the UK as the only solution that removes heat from the shop floor and then uses the same heat for over-door heating, achieving high levels of energy efficiency.
Leading retailers have been testing the air curtain with initial reports estimating cost savings of £1,500 per annum due to saved energy, and reduced CO2 output of over six tonnes, when compared to a typical electric air curtain.
The air curtain couples the benefits of Biddle patented rectifier and constant air velocity air curtain technologies with those of Daikin’s.
When connected to the Daikin VRVIII system, the air curtain inherits all the features of Daikin’s leading air conditioning solution, including heat recovery. Connection to the high COP heat recovery system enables COPs of up to 4.36, reducing the potential pay-back period to less than three years.
The air curtain’s rectifier grille minimises air turbulence at discharge to provide an optimal airflow pattern and a laminar air flow to floor level, which significantly reduces air induction. In a standard air curtain, separation efficiency can be as low as 50% - with the Daikin/Biddle air curtain it is up to 95%.
The product also includes a damper mechanism, which maintains a constant velocity across all fan speeds, ensuring optimum air velocity for efficiency and thermal comfort is maintained, regardless of external conditions.

Daikin’s VRVIII Heat Recovery System also won the 2008 Air Conditioning Product of the Year category of the H&V News Awards, thanks to its contribution towards energy efficiency and its low carbon status.
“Daikin is always committed to driving innovation in product development and application to provide the highest levels of performance and efficiency. Working together with Biddle, the air curtain is a result of this approach. That this has been recognised independently is a testament to the product and the benefit it offers to end-users,” said John Durbin, engineering department manager at Daikin UK.
Adrian Higginson, sales manager at Biddle said: “As cost and carbon concerns continue to make energy efficiency important, clients need technologies that meet this demand, while enhancing internal environments for staff and customers alike. By developing the air curtain in partnership with Daikin UK, we’re confident we’re offering the perfect solution.”
