Chris Mead and Jay Hayter have undertaken a major project to work on their eco-renovation of a Victorian terraced house in Central London. This renovation is featured in the new BBC 2 programme “It’s not easy being Green.”

With support from the Eco Team of Phil Brown and John Perna, Jay and Chris tackled the issue of installing an efficient and low carbon heating and hot water system into their large Victorian terraced property.  As with older Victorian properties with large rooms and high ceilings, many ideas had to be considered before a satisfactory and cost effective solution could be implemented.

Detailed planning and deployment of end-to-end renewable energy products formed the backbone of the solution, minimising both running costs and carbon emissions. The solution they selected for the heating and hot water system combined the use of an air source heat pump with solar panels.  To be totally effective, the air source heat pump and the solar panels would be fully integrated into a central control unit which would switch from one renewable source of energy to the other automatically and on a continuous basis, optimising free renewable energy throughout the year.

Altherma from Daikin  was selected as the air source heat pump product to be used in the renovation. The Altherma system is able to integrate with solar panels to produce hot water, therefore delivering further energy savings. Also, Altherma is technically ahead of other similar systems because it includes inverter technology and weather compensation as standard, ensuring maximum operational efficiency.

Altherma is able to provide the hot water requirements and heat the whole house, throughout the year, using a mixture of underfloor heating and low temperature radiators.

Darren Manley, Daikin UK Heating Sales Manager:
“We were delighted to be involved with Chris and Jay in this project.  Showcasing how our Altherma system can provide an economical and environmentally sustainable solution by using renewable energy, heat from the air around us, was a real opportunity for us to promote a better and wider understanding of heat pump systems.”

The programme showing the installation of Altherma was aired on BBC 2 on the 29th January 2009.
