When purchasing an air-conditioning unit, there are likely to be a few factors which are important to you. Aside from the initial costs of your product, you’ll want to know how powerful the unit’s heating and cooling abilities are, and how energy efficient it is – and how cheap vs. expensive it is to run – overall.
The terms COP (Coefficient of Performance) and EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) are both used to describe the heating and cooling efficiency of your air-conditioning unit.
What is COP and EER?
COP is a measurement of the energy efficiency of your air-conditioning unit’s heating performance.
EER is the ratio of a unit’s cooling output relative to its input power.
Together, each measurement indicates the ratio of heating or cooling provided by your air-conditioning unit relative to the amount of electrical input it requires to generate it.
For example, if your air conditioner generates 5kW of heat from 1kW of electrical input, its COP would be 5. If it only generates 2.6kW of heat from 1kW of electricity, the COP would be 2.6.
Similarly, if your air conditioner generates 5kW of cooling from 1kW of electrical input its EER would also be 5 – and if it generated 3.4kW from the same input, the EER would be 3.4.
These unitless measurements are universal, and help you to determine how efficient your equipment is. In simple terms, the higher the COP and EER, the more energy efficient the equipment is.
Why do COP and EER matter?
Energy efficiency is particularly important when deciding which unit to purchase. Not only does a more efficient unit mean cheaper energy bills; it’s also better for the planet, using less energy to produce its heating or cooling output.
At Daikin, we’re committed to producing more energy efficient products as part of our pledge to the planet. According to scientific estimates, we have until 2050 to reach net zero, and reverse the effects of climate change. Every energy saving measure we take on our products is not only better for your pocket, but better for the environment, too.
The Daikin guarantee
When you choose Daikin to supply your air-conditioning unit, we want you to have complete peace of mind that you’re receiving world-leading technology that meets the highest standards of efficiency.
That’s why Daikin is a certified member of EUROVENT – a prestigious international organisation of manufacturers committed to improving the standards of air conditioning throughout the European market.
To support this mission, all EUROVENT members’ products are subject to rigorous testing in independent laboratories.
We participate in this testing scheme so you can guarantee the COP and EER values we quote for our products are both accurate and objective.
