The move towards heat pumps

Our net zero commitment

The UK government is committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This will mark the end of Britain's contribution to global warming. It's a huge step in the right direction, and we all need to play our part.

A focus on sustainability

In order to meet the UK's target of net zero by 2050, switching to sustainable energy is critical. This means we need to replace our petrol and diesel cars with electric vehicles. And we need to swap gas and oil-fired boilers with low-carbon alternatives.

In order to meet the UK’s net zero targets, 80% of homeowners will need to switch over to heat pump technology by 2035.

Moving away from fossil fuel boilers

Although the government shifted their position slightly in September 2023 by extending the gas boiler ban until 2035, the message remains the same. 80% of homeowners will need to switch to heat pumps by 2035. And that 80% covers the majority of UK homes, including those off-grid.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has also had a major boost. It now provides UK homeowners with a financial incentive of £7,500 to switch to a lower-carbon heating system. And the latest ECO+ scheme, launched in November 2022, will see hundreds of thousands of homes receive new insulation.

With the increased funding of £7,500 now in place, the incentive to make the move to renewables has never been more attractive.

Possible total ban

There is a possibility that, in time, the government will put a complete gas boiler ban in place. The home heating market is definitely moving towards this final destination, and we all must be ready for this shift towards renewables.

Now is the time to make sure you are fully trained and ready for the switch.

Introducing heat pumps

What are heat pumps?

Heat pumps offer a highly efficient, low-carbon alternative to the traditional boiler. The eco-friendly technology works completely differently from a standard heater; instead of generating heat, a heat pump simply moves it around.

How do they work?

Heat pumps operate in a similar way to a fridge, which extracts heat from inside and transfers it outside. To provide home heating, this process is reversed. An air source heat pump will extract heat from the air outside the home before transferring it into a hot water or heating system.

The sustainable solution

There are a few different types of heat pump. But they all have one thing in common: they're powered mainly by renewable energy, making them one of the most sustainable heating solutions available today. In fact, our latest figures show that having a heat pump installed does more to reduce your carbon footprint than giving up a car.

The economic solution

Heat pumps use less power to run than standard heating systems. Heat pump systems can be three or four times more efficient than an electric heater. And swapping from a fossil fuel boiler to an air source heat pump could save an average household over £250 per year in energy costs.

Quite simply, heat pump technology is changing the face of home heating.
