Water-source heat pumps

Daikin Altherma 3 GEO – an energy-efficient water-to-water pump for apartment buildings

The multi-residence heating solution

Thanks to their ability to maintain a constant temperature, water-to-water heat pumps can be a cost-effective heating solution for apartment blocks (rather than single homes). Daikin Altherma 3 GEO for Collective Housing, provides an innovative approach, with individual heat pumps delivering economical heating, hot water and optional cooling for each apartment connected via a central water loop.

So use of renewable energy is optimised and heat losses in distribution are minimised, improving the environmental performance of the apartment building.

How does Daikin Altherma 3 GEO for Collective Housing work?

Daikin Altherma 3 GEO for Collective Housing consists of a network of heat pumps connected to a common central water loop. In each apartment is a Daikin Altherma GEO unit - a high efficiency water-to-water heat pump with integrated domestic hot water (DHW) cylinder.

The central water loop can be warmed/or cooled  by a water source such as a river, lake or canal, or by other energy sources such as:

  • Ground or air source heat pump
  • Shared ground array, borehole or thermal piles
  • District heat network
  • Waste heat recovery

Advantages and disadvantages of water-source heat pumps

A water-source heat pump can be highly efficient way of heating and cooling a large building or tower block near a body of water. In the case of the Daikin Altherma 3 GEO for Collective Housing, the central water loop that feeds the water-to-water heat pumps in each individual apartment can draw energy from a body of water, or another energy source such as a ground or air source heat pump, or district heat network.

However, a water-source heat pump isn’t usually suitable for an individual home, because deep wells need to be drilled to install the system. And the capacity of the submersible pump, along with the depth of the groundwater, has a direct impact on the energy savings the pump can deliver.
