What you need to know about air-to-air heat pump maintenance

To get the most out of your heat pump in terms of efficiency and cost savings, it's important to have it maintained and serviced regularly and correctly

Air-to-air heat pumps (also known as air conditioners) perform differently Air-to-air heat pumps (also known as air conditioners) perform differently from a standard boiler or heating system. It is important that you carry out regular checks and annual services to ensure your heat pump is working as efficiently as possible.

Regular heat pump maintenance for a long life

Air-to-air heat pumps are unique solutions for temperature control that don’t require as much maintenance as traditional heating systems. Still, if you want to get the most out of your unit, follow these simple care techniques and have it serviced each year.

Scheduled servicing, frequent spot-checks and routine cleaning will extend the system's lifespan and maintain its energy efficiency. After all, regular check-ups are far more cost-effective in the long run than ad hoc repairs. They enhance efficiency, reduce energy consumption and minimise the chance of the system breaking down. Look after your air-to-air heat pump and it could last decades.

A clean unit is a happy unit

Cleaning is one of the simplest forms of preventive heat pump maintenance and ensures your system performs effectively and your air stays healthy. Most air-to-air heat pumps have accessible air filters and deodorising filters that you can easily remove and clean. Just follow these seven steps:

1. Turn off your unit

2. Lift the panel to access the filters.

3. Carefully unclip and remove the air filters.

4. Unhook or slide out the deodorising filter panels.

5. Gently brush the filters using a suitable attachment on your vacuum cleaner or wash them with lukewarm water and a mild detergent.

6. Let them air dry, away from direct sunlight, then return the clean filters to the unit.

7. Finally, wipe the outside of the closed unit with a clean, soft cloth.

Efficient operation

A properly maintained heat pump is better at keeping the air in your home at a set temperature and dispersing it evenly. Here are some other simple tips to ensure your air-to-air heat pump runs efficiently:

  • Ensure there is always a flow of air around your heat pump, inside and outside. Check that nothing is blocking it.
  • Set the airflow and direction appropriately.
  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Set your heat pump to an appropriate temperature.
  • Check regularly for any leaks or changes in airflow.

Regular professional maintenance

We recommend a service by a qualified engineer once a year. During a heat pump service, the technician will conduct a comprehensive audit of the system, including:

  • Topping up the refrigerant if it’s running low
  • Measuring the airflow to ensure it is sufficient.
  • Inspecting filters and other parts for dirt
  • Looking out for any wear and tear.
  • Ensuring the remote control is operating properly.

Preventive maintenance of your air-to-air heat pump is the best thing you can do to keep running costs down, avoid expensive repairs and ensure its ongoing reliability – so you can continue enjoying the benefits for years to come.
