Daikin is committed to building a healthy planet, together

Social and environmental impact

As the market leader in our sector, we have a responsibility to the world. We must act responsibly towards the environment and consider the legacy we’re leaving for the next generation.

At Daikin, we create corporate value by creating value for society. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an important source of inspiration as we work on making a positive impact on our planet. The most pressing area where we can make a difference is SDG13: Climate Action. With this in mind, we designed Daikin's Environmental Vision 2050 to help society reach its decarbonisation goals.

A key aim in this vision is to be carbon-neutral in all our activities by 2050. That means not only in our manufacturing and operations but the entire lifecycle of our products, from the design phase until the end of a product's life.

Our first two big targets are a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025 and a 50% reduction by 2030. This is compared to the "business as usual" scenario, with 2019 as the base year.

A global goal

This is a global Daikin Group vision. To measure our progress, we provide data to our parent company, which reports in line with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures framework. Bureau Veritas then independently audits our data. We are also on the Climate Disclosure Project A-list.

We have analysed our carbon impact. Ninety per cent of our total CO2 emissions are generated during the use phase of our equipment. A further 9% comes from end-of-life disposal of units. Design, manufacture and transport account for less than 2%.

Consumers can reduce their carbon footprint by installing a heat pump. These are generally more energy efficient than other heating solutions and replace gas boilers or other systems that run on fossil fuels. With every heat pump Daikin installs, we are contributing to decarbonisation.

We are also active in developing solutions for the end-of-life phase of our products, especially the responsible handling of refrigerants. This prevents gases from going to waste – or being released into the environment – and reduces the need to produce new refrigerants.

Towards a sustainable future

All our factories use energy-saving measures such as solar panels and LED lighting and our Ostend factory is part of a district heat recovery network. These initiatives, and many more like them, are embedded in Daikin’s Green Heart programme, which helps our factories improve their environmental and social performance.
