Can a heat pump be covered safely and does doing so affect its performance or efficiency?

Yes, you can cover a heat pump as long as airflow isn’t restricted. Heat pumps need clear space around the intake and exhaust to work at their best. If air can flow freely, the system will remain efficient and reliable. To shield the unit from leaves or weather, opt for purpose-built protective covers or shelters designed for HVAC equipment that allow full airflow.

If the aesthetics are a concern, there are several options for homeowners. The installer will find a discreet place for the outdoor element of heat pump unit and Daikin’s latest models have been redesigned specifically for home environments, with unobtrusive styling that will blend into any setting. Also, keep in mind that any cover must allow for service access - if the unit cannot be easily reached, it cannot be properly maintained.
