Renewable energy is hugely important. As many countries experience unprecedented fuel prices and a climate crisis, renewable energy is cost-effective and better for our health and that of the world around us. Renewable energy sources are varied, from solar and wind and to hydro, tidal, geothermal and biomass.

The advantages of renewable energy

The benefits of switching to renewable energy resources are clear, not least the positive impact on the health of humans and our planet.

Using renewable energy cuts out the emissions created by fossil fuels. Fossil fuels mean harmful gases, which means more respiratory illness, as well as global warming.

Renewable energy systems require less maintenance. They cut costs, by replacing power plants that are expensive to run. Fossil fuels may run out in 60 years, but we will always have solar, wind and geothermal energy.

What's more, renewable energy lowers our reliance on imported fossil fuels. Political crises affect global fuel prices. Renewable energy means independence from imported energy.

What impact does renewable energy have?

Renewable energy saves money. Solar energy is derived by capturing energy from sunlight and converting it into heat, electricity or hot water. Photovoltaic systems turn sunlight into electricity through solar cells. In the long term, that could eliminate energy costs; in the short term, it cuts your bills.

Wind farms use turbines to turn wind into electricity. Renewable wind energy takes various forms, from commercial-grade systems to single turbines.

A renewable system uses much less energy than a combustion-based system. Research conducted by Energy and Environmental Science shows that worldwide, the energy we use falls by 56% with an electric system powered by renewable sources. That's due to the efficiency of electric vehicles and electrified industry, eliminating the energy needed to obtain fossil fuels. It's also due to the efficiency of electric heat pumps.

Air-to-air heat pumps extract heat from the air outside and use it to warm your home. Air-to-water heat pumps transfer heat from outside air to water that heats your rooms via radiators or underfloor heating. They also provide hot water. Ground source heat pumps take heat energy from water in underground pipes and pump it to an indoor heat exchanger.

Heat pumps are more efficient than other systems. While the compressor and pumps need electricity to work, they use less than the quantity of heat they import from outside.

Add in the health and social benefits, and it's clear renewable energy is the natural choice.
