Heat pumps: It’s time to switch

Heat pumps provide an eco-friendly heating solution that’s better for the planet, and your pocket. And with £7,500 grant funding now available, which can cover most of the installation cost, there’s never been a better time to switch. Get ready for the future of home heating in Greater Manchester.

Working in partnership to create a cleaner, greener city region

Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has set an ambitious target to achieve net zero by 2038 – and has a Five-Year Environment Plan, which details the urgent actions we all need to take to help achieve this.

As part of this mission, we need to reduce the carbon emissions that are produced by the energy we use to heat our buildings, shifting away from fossil fuels to renewable sources.

Heat pumps offer a highly efficient, green alternative to the traditional boiler. They're powered mainly by renewable electricity, making them one of the most sustainable heating solutions available today. In fact, having a heat pump installed does more to reduce your carbon footprint than giving up your car, or going vegan!

GMCA is working in partnership with Daikin to deliver the large-scale introduction of heat pumps across the city region. We’re also driving innovation in products and services in the low carbon sector and addressing the green skills gap.

Together, we can help to decarbonise Greater Manchester, and create a cleaner, greener city region for everyone.

Why is now the time to switch?

When it comes to eco-friendly home heating, a heat pump is the way to go. But maybe you’ve been putting off making the switch because of the high upfront cost? Not anymore. The government is now offering up to £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to switch to a heat pump, which brings the cost right down.

About the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government incentive that aims to make heat pumps more accessible for people who are not eligible for other means-tested funding

It offers up to £7,500 for homeowners to replace their fossil fuel boiler (gas, oil, or LPG) with an eco-friendly heat pump, which is around four times as efficient as a boiler, so you could save money on your running costs too.

For a simple heat pump installation in an energy efficient home, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) could cover most of the cost of your new heat pump.

Or, if you also need a new hot water tank and radiator upgrade, your installation could cost you around £2,255 on top of the BUS grant. That’s still likely to be less than a new gas boiler and hot water tank!

But don’t leave it too late

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is fantastic for homeowners – and for our climate. But don’t forget it’s a limited fund. The grants are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, so the time to act is now.
