We already have everything we need to get to net zero
We have 95% of the technologies we need today to save our climate. And we have the know-how to get the rest. In short, we already have everything we need to get to net zero.

No miracles needed
The message comes directly from Mark Jacobson, Professor of Engineering at Stanford University. His book ‘No Miracles Needed’ explains how we already have the technologies needed to decarbonise our society. We don’t need any miracles. We don’t need any new solutions. We already have everything we need.
He explains how we have to stop using outdated technologies, such as natural gas, and instead focus on the new technology we already have. These amazing technologies harness the energy from wind, water and solar power, giving us all the electricity, heat and energy we need to run our society.

The power of now
This is the core message that is being put across in Daikin’s inspiring ‘Power of Now’ mural, featured at the BBC Earth Experience. The mural tells a positive story using images and words to show that we already have 95% of the technology we need to achieve net zero.
Daikin wanted to create a mural that would show everyone that the power to challenge the climate crisis is in our collective hands right now. So we commissioned artist Vic Lee to create a mural on the site of the BBC Earth Experience.
The painting itself is created in Air-Ink, an existing tech made from carbon-based air pollution. It’s a visualisation of the fact that we already have amazing technology to tackle the climate crisis.
Michaela Strachan interview
Giulia Kapp, Head of Marketing at Daikin met up with TV Presenter Michaela Strachan to talk about the mural and the powerful story behind it. In this video, they discuss the technologies available, and the changes we can all make to cut our impact on the planet.
In the UK, 25% of carbon emissions come from heating our buildings. Switching to a heat pump will save you two or three tonnes of carbon per year. That’s like giving up your car or opting for an electric car. It makes a massive difference. So a switch over from fossil fuel boilers to renewables will be really significant for the nation as a whole.
And it’s not just homeowners who need to make changes. Businesses need to address their carbon emissions too. So at Daikin, we’re pioneering ways to reduce the impact of our manufacturing processes, such as using recycled refrigerants within our systems. And we’re also looking at the entire supply chain to see how we can further reduce carbon.
It’s time to act
There’s no doubt that we’re on the edge of a climate disaster. The world urgently needs to stop using fossil fuels and turn towards clean, renewable energy sources. If we don’t, we’re facing catastrophic climate damage that will change life for us all.
But, despite this worrying picture, there is hope. We already have the technology in place to make that vital difference. We just need to start using it.
