Daikin Altherma low temperature monobloc heat pumps provide heating or cooling and domestic hot water for three homes newly built by award-winning housebuilder Distinctive Developments in a former farmyard near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
What’s behind the choice of heat pumps for this development?
Distinctive Developments uses the latest technology and innovative construction techniques including renewable energy. Its latest developments feature air source heat pumps to provide sustainable, environmentally friendly and more efficient heating.
What makes this a particularly ‘green’ solution?
The monobloc heat pump transfers heat to – and from – the house directly via the water circuit. This streamlines installation and maintenance and minimises the amount of refrigerant needed as it’s all inside the heat pump. And because it’s R32 refrigerant, it has a low global warming potential.
How is the heat delivered?
The houses are early adopters of Daikin Altherma wall and floor-mounted heat pump convectors to warm or cool the interiors. The ground floors have underfloor heating, also driven by the heat pumps.
How do the convectors work?
The heat pump convectors are quietly fan-assisted to improve the transfer of heat from water to air – or the opposite in summer. Each unit can be controlled separately.
How do the heat pumps provide domestic hot water?
Each house has a 300 litre Daikin hot water cylinder. The heat pump economically maintains a constant temperature, but a conventional heating element is on standby for periods of heavy demand.
As a result, the cottage has a much-reduced carbon footprint. A further benefit is that the R32 refrigerant in the new-technology heat pump has a much lower global warming potential (GWP) than earlier gases.
