The aim of the Home Energy Scotland (HES) scheme is to help homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient.
Homeowners in Scotland can apply for a grant as well as an interest-free loan. A rural uplift is also available to provide extra support to rural and island homes, where it may be more expensive to install home improvements.

5 steps to installing a heat pump using HES funding
- Contact Home Energy Scotland
- Find an installer
- Find the right heat pump
- Schedule your installation
- Enjoy market-leading efficiency
Step 1 – Contact Home Energy Scotland
To get started and find out if you’re eligible, you will need to call Home Energy Scotland personally. Your installer is not allowed to apply for you. An advisor will ask you a few simple questions, and if you qualify, you’ll be given access to an online application form to start your application.
Please note, before you start work on your heat pump installation, make sure you’ve received the grant or loan offer in writing. Your installer can’t make a start until this step has been completed.
Step 2 – Find an installer
Installing a heat pump isn’t a do-it-yourself job. Whether you opt for a hybrid heat pump or air source heat pump, you’ll need a fully trained installer with the skills and knowledge to install your heat pump professionally. Fortunately, finding one is easy with our network of Daikin-trained Sustainable Home specialists.
Step 3 – Find the right heat pump technology
Your Daikin Sustainable Home specialist will assess your home and living arrangements to see which type of heat pump is best for you and whether your installation is eligible for a grant under the scheme.
Once your installer has prepared a customised quote, which takes into account the amount from the grant or loan, you’re given the chance to look things over and confirm you want to proceed.
Step 4 – Schedule your installation
Your Sustainable Home Installer will take care of your heat pump installation from start to finish. They’ll install the indoor unit(s) and then the outdoor unit, usually mounting it on the side of your home. Then they’ll connect up the electrical wiring and the piping. And finally, they’ll quality test the entire system.
Step 5 – Enjoy market-leading efficiency
Once everything is complete, your Sustainable Home Installer will set up and programme your system to ensure you’re receiving the maximum efficiency from your new low-carbon heating system. And with our ‘Stand By Me’ warranty scheme, you can rely on market-leading support going forward.
